The Best Bedding for Your Dog Crate (And What to Avoid)
A crate is only as comfortable as what goes inside it, and the right bedding turns a bare metal box into a place your dog genuinely wants to be. The wrong bedding, on the other hand, ends up shredded, soggy or pushed into a heap. Here is how to get it right without spending a fortune.
Choose washable above all else
Whatever you buy, make sure it survives a regular spin in the machine. Muddy paws, the odd accident and general doggy smell are all part of life, so bedding that washes easily and dries quickly will save you endless hassle. Two cheaper beds you can rotate often beat one expensive bed you are afraid to wash.
Match the bedding to the dog
- Puppies and chewers: start with a flat, tough vet-bed style mat rather than a plush bed that invites destruction.
- Older or stiff dogs: a supportive orthopaedic foam base helps aching joints rest properly.
- Hot sleepers: a thin breathable mat keeps things cool on summer nights.
Skip the hazards
Avoid loose blankets with long threads that can tangle around legs, and steer clear of anything with stuffing your dog might pull out and swallow. If your dog is a committed chewer, keep bedding minimal until that phase passes, then upgrade to something cosier once you can trust them.
The finishing touch
A light, breathable cover over a wire crate can make the space feel more den-like and help nervous dogs settle. Leave one side open for airflow, and never use a cover that traps heat. Get the bedding and atmosphere right and you will often find your dog wandering into the crate to nap entirely off their own back.
