How to Keep Your Dog Crate Clean and Fresh
A clean crate is a healthy crate. Dogs are tidy by nature and will resent a den that smells of old accidents or stale bedding. The good news is that keeping a crate fresh takes only a few minutes a week once you have a simple routine in place.
The weekly wash
Once a week, take everything out and wash the bedding on a warm cycle. While that is going round, wipe down the crate tray and bars with a pet-safe cleaner, never a harsh bleach that could irritate paws and noses. Rinse well, dry thoroughly, and your dog comes back to a crate that feels brand new.
Dealing with accidents
- Clean any mess straight away so odours do not set in.
- Use an enzyme cleaner designed for pet stains, which breaks down the smell rather than masking it.
- Make sure everything is fully dry before your dog returns.
Keep it smelling fresh
Air the crate near an open window when you can, and avoid heavily perfumed sprays, which dogs dislike far more than we realise. A quick daily shake-out of the bedding and a once-over with a damp cloth on the tray keeps things pleasant between deeper cleans. Little and often always beats one big scrub.
Stay on top of these small jobs and your dog’s crate will remain the comfortable, welcoming space it is meant to be, for years to come.
